The Dallas Cowboys have not had a strong start to the new NFL season. On Sunday, the Cowboys suffered their second loss in three games after being blown out by the Chicago Bears, 31-14.
Defense has been a significant issue for Dallas this season, as the departure of two-time All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons left a massive void for the team. In their first three games of the season, the Cowboys’ defensive line has already given up 95 points or an average of 31.7 points per contest.
A further testament to this team’s defensive woes is a 45-year stat that surfaced after their brutal loss to the Bears on Sunday.
“Per @EliasSports: The 13 completions and 5 Pass TD of 25+ yards are the most the #Cowboys have allowed over the first 3 games of a season in the last 45 years,” posted former ESPN reporter Ed Werder on X.
The folks on social media have not been very nice to the Cowboys after learning about this new stat.
"Just an absolute disgrace… total coaching, player eval, and performance collapse!" a comment on X read.
"I might be, and hopefully am wrong, but I fear that Matt Eberflus has “lost the room.” From their effort on the field to his discussions with players on the sideline on camera, it looks to be a total collapse of discipline and leadership. Unfortunately, the buck stops with him," another said.
"Why are you telling us? Tell Jerry. He's one of the FEW that still believes this crappy roster can compete for a championship. " a fan declared.
"Well, anyone paying attention knew Dallas had a league worst defense without Parsons (and a league best d with him) so of course Jerry traded him for the chance to draft two more Mazi Smiths," a reaction read.
It has been nearly five decades since the Cowboys have had this rough a start to a campaign, at least on the defensive end. They have their offense to thank for their single win this season, which came in the form of a 40-37 overtime win against the New York Giants in Week 2.
The offseason arrival of wide receiver George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers has helped Dallas’ cause on offense. The 24-year-old wide receiver already has 166 yards and two touchdowns on 13 receptions in his first three games. However, it appears that the Cowboys will need to make moves to shore up their defense as well.
Dallas general manager Jerry Jones has already indicated that he’s open to the prospect of adding defensive help. He might be forced to act sooner rather than later, though, if the Cowboys continue to struggle defensively like they have through the first three weeks of action.
Up next for Dallas is a matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, as the Cowboys’ pass rushing will be put to the test against Jordan Love.
