Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs Sends Clear Message to Defense After Loss to Panthers

The Dallas Cowboys fell back below .500 in Week 6.

A loss to the Carolina Panthers dropped them to 2-3-1 on the and there was a very familiar reason for their defeat.

The defense was disappointing once again.

It's been a common theme for a team that finds itself among the worst in the league on that side of the ball.

However, this time around their struggles came against a Panthers offense that has had issues of their own this year and saw them unable to stop a player they rostered just last year.

After the loss to the Panthers, Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs revealed his frustration with the defense and said he feels like they have "no identity" right now.

Diggs told SportsDayDFW (via Dallas Morning News' Calvin Watkins), "Yeah its very frustrating. It's all these points (given up), the receivers are running wide open down the field, too many busted coverages. It's a lot. I feel like we’re all over the place and we really don’t have no identity."

”No identity” might be just about the nicest thing you can say about the Cowboys’ defense this year.
Through six weeks there haven’t been many positives.

They were getting lit up by the Eagles in Week 1 right until a weather delay brought the game to halt.

In Week 2 they gave up 37 points to the Giants and 450 passing yards to Russell Wilson, who was benched free just one more game.
Then it was 31 points to the Bears.

In Week 4 they were torched for 40 points by the Packers.

Week 5 was the lone bright spot. They held the Jets to 6 points over the first three quarters before they tacked on 16 meaningless points in the fourth.

This week they allowed 30 points to the Panthers with their former running back, Rico Dowdle, running for 183 yards.

The struggles shouldn’t be a huge surprise. Dallas allowed the second-most points in the league in 2024 at 27.5 points per game. Then they traded away one of the NFL’s best defensive players.

The poor showings from the defense this year have unfortunately wasted a lot of good football from the Cowboys’ offense.

It's unclear if the Cowboys have any plans to bolster this struggling group ahead of the trade deadline as it needs a lot of help and the team is currently 1.5 games out of the last Wild Card spot in the NFL with plenty of tough matchups ahead of them.

If the team doesn't have an eye on any reinforcements, then we're likely to see the Cowboys' defense remain without an identity and continue to surrender a ton of points throughout the year.
