The Dallas Cowboys’ star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb pushed back on comparisons to franchise legend Michael Irvin, emphasizing humility despite his rapid rise.
Lamb addressed the discussion Friday in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, after Irvin drew parallels between the two receivers, both of whom wore the iconic No. 88 jersey in Dallas.
“Just being honest. i haven’t done anything yet. Grateful always, Appreciate u Mike for sharing, I need more. No Greed just hunger.”
Irvin, speaking on a recent episode of The White House Pod, explained why he has long viewed Lamb as a worthy successor to the legacy tied to the number.
“If you wear 88 there’s a whole lot that comes with that. Soon as you get it, you’re going to raise the hope up of a whole Cowboys nation and it’s a lot of pressure. If it’s too much for you, we understand. You just wear the number 2… I said, if you are not him we will keep searching for the next.”
He added:
“The next day he said I’m going to wear it. I’m going to do it and now go deliver. And he has.”

Lamb’s response reflects a measured approach despite a résumé that already places him among the league’s elite receivers. The 27-year-old has steadily built a standout career since being selected No. 17 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.
His accolades include a First-team All-Pro selection in 2023, two Second-team All-Pro honors in 2022 and 2024, and five Pro Bowl appearances from 2021 through 2025. Lamb also led the NFL in receptions in 2023, further solidifying his status as a focal point of Dallas’ offense.
While Irvin’s praise underscores the expectations tied to the Cowboys’ storied history at wide receiver, Lamb’s comments signal a continued focus on growth rather than legacy comparisons. His emphasis on “hunger” aligns with a mindset centered on sustaining production and pursuing further achievements.
As Dallas prepares for the upcoming season, Lamb remains a central figure in the team’s offensive identity, balancing recognition with a clear message that his goals extend beyond what he has already accomplished.
