Cowboys eyeing first consecutive double-digit win seasons since 1996

The Dallas Cowboys are one win away from achieving consecutive double-digit win seasons for the first time in 25 years.

Dallas welcomes the Texans to town on Sunday, holding a 9-3 record.

I am not trying to jump the gun, but Dallas will likely win this Sunday and then some. The Cowboys finished 12-5 a season ago, and one more win this season would be two straight 10-plus win seasons.

I want a Super Bowl or even an NFC Championship, but as a fan that wasn't born until 1996, it is hard to believe this will be the first time I will have seen this done by them. Ezekiel Elliott is in the same boat as me.

“It's cool, but I know what we all want. Double-digit wins back-to-back season is cool, but we want to make a run in the playoffs. That's what's important,” Elliott said.

Over the Years

When I think back upon the recent successful teams I have seen from the Cowboys, the team either suffered a significant injury or did not meet expectations.

In 2014 the Cowboys went 12-4, and the following year Tony Romo got hurt, and they finished 4-12. In 2016, during the rookie season of Dak Prescott and Elliott, the team went 13-3. They could only muster 9-7 in 2017, missing the playoffs. In 2018 they went 10-6 and won a playoff game, and they followed with an 8-8 record.

The Cowboys made the playoffs back-to-back in 2006 and 2007, but the Bill Parcells-led team in 2006 only won nine games and lost as a Wild Card team to the Seattle Seahawks.

If you have followed my posts since I started writing for ITS, you know I have been very critical of Head Coach Mike McCarthy, and I quickly jumped on him after losing to the Packers and wondering why he didn't try to kick the FG instead of going for it.

I have harped on him a lot in the last few years, from not calling a timeout to not fixing the penalty issue. In the victory over the Colts, the team only finished with three penalties for 43 yards, a season low!

We all know that winning in this league is difficult, and the Cowboys haven't been able to do it consistently for nearly 20 years. They tend to have one really good season, and then something happens. Like the way this season started. Losing Prescott in week one and having to turn to Cooper Rush.

The end goal is always the same, but the way this season started in week one losing Prescott, McCarthy needs to be given his flowers for producing a 9-3 record.

Say what you want, but the Cowboys are still in a position to win the division and grab the one seed if a few things fall their way.

The Cowboys still have some hurdles they need to jump over to finish this season strong. Let's avoid hiccups this week against the Texans and then on the road at Jacksonville.

Everything is setting up beautifully for a Christmas Eve showdown against the Eagles that might break the record for the number of views.
