FRISCO — The Dallas Cowboys defense saw regression this season with Mike Zimmer taking over for Dan Quinn. His group found their rhythm down the stretch though they spent the majority of the season struggling with a constant hassle of injury woes down the depth chart.
Zimmer's return is questionable as the Cowboys continue their search for their next head coach, meaning Dallas could be looking for their third defensive coordinator in as many seasons.
But the right coach will not fix all the problems on this defense. The Cowboys need players, more specifically upgrades, in several spots. One position in need of a reset could be at safety where Dallas graded out poorly with Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker in the lineup.
The Cowboys could choose to draft a safety to install in the defensive backfield though they should have enticing options on the free agent market as well.
SportsGrid's Zack Cook analyzed potential landing spots for several marquee free agents, exposing the Cowboys' glaring offseason need. Luckily, he presented the solution of signing safety Jevon Holland.
Holland has played all four of his NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins, but would provide an upgrade for Dallas at that position. He regressed a bit in year four, but found himself making an impact in the box score his first three seasons.
He has totaled 219 solo tackles, five sacks and five interceptions through his first four seasons.
The way the Cowboys approached last offseason, it is questionable that they pursue many big names on the market especially at a higher price. This does not change the need for them to either develop replacements in-house or find them elsewhere.
Dallas could certainly choose other positions besides safety to spend big and commit more of their time and attention. But attacking a defensive backfield that became a weakness throughout last season would not be a bad start.
This all will start to unfold as the Cowboys have made their decision at the head coach spot with Brian Schottenheimer getting the job ... and now starting to prep for the NFL Draft.
