Cowboys Kicker Brandon Aubrey Speaks Out On New Contract

FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys fans are probably just now getting over what started as a silly joke made by a sometimes silly man in "Bones'' Fassel.

But the next chapter involving Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey?

This is a serious matter.

Aubrey has become arguably the best kicker in the NFL. A converted soccer star, the McKinney, Texas native has in his two seasons made two Pro Bowls and was first-team All-Pro and second-team All-Pro.

Soon, it'll be time for somebody - ideally, his Cowboys - to pay him like that.

Fassel was the Cowboys' special teams coordinator but has now moved to the Tennessee Titans. Cowboys Nation surely wishes him well ...

But Cowboys Nation does not wish him to steal Dallas' All-Pro kicker.

Aubrey was a guest on The Dumb Zone podcast and revealed - tongue-in-cheek? - that Fassel has expressed a desire to try and trade for him this offseason.

"He told me he's going to try and trade for me," Aubrey said. "I don't know if that is out of any sort of reality or whatnot, but he's a great dude, and we're going to miss him."

It's not "reality''? In fact, it's sort of "tampering.''

But we'll let that go and move on to the no-laughing-matter portion of the Aubrey case.

Aubrey will be entering the last year on his contract in 2025 and we imagine that owners Jerry and Stephen Jones plan to seal a deal with him.

Some of the numbers are easy. Aubrey might've been Dallas' best player in 2024, nailing 14 of his 17 field goals from 50-plus yards. In his career, he's made 89.4 percent of his field goals. He's got a long of 65, with as powerful a leg as literally anybody in the world.

But here's the hard one: How much will Dallas pay him?

He is entering the final year of a three-year contract and he's doing so with a new agent. That would be Todd France, notorious to some Cowboys fans because he also represents Dak Prescott.

No doubt France believes his client is deserving of a record-setting extension, and the foundation of that?

Three NFL kickers presently have contracts that average at least $6 million a season, with Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s $6.4 million average at the top of the heap.

So Dallas might has well pencil in right now a $6 million per year proposal.

“I’m eligible for an extension so it’s up to my agent to go up to the Cowboys and see if there’s any interest in signing it there early,” Aubrey said Tuesday at the Super Bowl, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “If an extension comes, then an extension comes. If not, I’m still making 10 times what I was making working code (as a non-NFL civilian), so I’m pretty happy.”

It's worth noting that Dallas isn't obliged to do anything here. Aubrey is under contract for 2025 and in theory could be franchise tagged for 2026 (that figures to also be in the $6 million range).

The Cowboys are often in wait-and-see mode on such deals. We will wait and see as to whether they get serious about a seriously great talent.
