Cowboys' Legend Troy Aikman Nominated For Prestigious Broadcasting Award

FRISCO - Don't look now, but Troy Aikman has been an NFL announcer almost twice as long as he was a Dallas Cowboys' quarterback. And the star who won three Super Bowls is again this season up for a "championship" in broadcasting.

When The Emmy nominations were released this week, Aikman was on the list for "Outstanding Event Analyst" for the seventh time. He went three-for-three winning Super Bowls for the Cowboys, but has yet to win an Emmy.

"It means a lot,” Aikman said about his sixth nomination in 2024. “To be nominated means a lot. I’ve been nominated quite a few times. I feel like Susan Lucci. I’ve been nominated a lot but haven’t won anything. This an honor. It’s something that does mean a lot, because, like we were talking about with golf or anything else; when you’re playing football, you want to go win the Super Bowl. And when you’re broadcasting, I think the highest acclaim you could get is to win an Emmy. That’s been elusive, but who knows? Maybe one day."

Last year Aikman was beaten out by Fox's Greg Olsen. This year he'll go up against Olsen, Fox baseball announcer John Smoltz, CBS college basketball analyst Bill Raftery and ESPN's Peyton Manning. Aikman was also a finalist in 2006, '07, '08, '20, '22 and '23.

After a 12-year career with the Cowboys he retired in 2000, and two years later joined Joe Buck in Fox's broadcast booth. The two have been together calling NFL games since. Now on ESPN's Monday Night Football, next season will be their 24th.

The previous record for a duo was Pat Summerall and John Madden, who called games on CBS and FOX for 21 years.

While Aikman's dramatic waiting to be crowned will be part of this year's intrigue when the awards are announced May 20, it's fascinating that Olsen is again nominated while the man who replaced him as FOX's No. 1 analyst - Tom Brady - was shut out after an underwhelming first year behind the microphone.
