Last offseason, Dallas Cowboys owner jerry Jones promised fans his team would be all-in during free agency and the draft in an effort to keep up with the NFC’s elite.
Jones then proceeded to sit on his hands from March on as premier free agents like running backs Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs and Derrick Henry, offensive tackle Jonah Williams, and several others signed with other teams.
Dallas’ biggest free-agent signing? Linebacker Eric Kendricks.
Aside from that, the team added just four additional players who weren’t on the roster the previous year and watched running back Tony Pollard, offensive tackle Tyron Smith, center Tyler Biadasz, defensive end Dorance Armstrong, defensive end Dante Fowler, defensive tackle Jonathan Hankins, and cornerback Noah Igbinoghene all signed elsewhere.
If the Cowboys take the same laissez-faire approach to free agency this year, it won’t sit right with star pass-rusher Micah Parsons, who recently put Jones on notice in an interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
“The talent is there, we just got to be aggressive the same way [other teams] did," Parsons said. “I don't want to sit back and watch other [teams] build and build and us stay the same — definitely some call to action. I want to see us become aggressive and get some players that will come in and make an impact. I want to see us bring back our own players, that's just as important. Let's see what we can do there.”
Jones would be wise to listen to Parson’s proactive push.
There are plenty of positions the Cowboys could use an upgrade after averaging the sixth-fewest rushing yards per game (100.3), and allowing the second-most points per game (27.5), fourth-most rushing yards per game (137.1), and fifth-most total yards per game (355.2).
Dallas is approximately $2.84 million over the salary cap right now, but the team can clear some cap space by cutting ties with a few players and restructuring a few deals.
If the Cowboys were to make a splash in free agency, some of the top players available that would fill areas of need include running backs Najee Harris and J.K. Dobbins, receivers Stefon Diggs, Tee Higgins, Keenan Allen, and Amari Cooper, offensive tackles Cam Robinson, Ronnie Stanley, and Jedrick Wills, pass-rushers Josh Sweat, Chase Young, Khalil Mack, Haason Reddick, Matt Judon, and Zack Baun, and defensive backs Carlton Davis, Charvarius Ward, D.J. Reed.
