Cowboys Named Potential Destination For Intriguing Running Back
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys need to get their running back situation sorted out heading into the offseason.

Tony Pollard is slated to hit free agency this March, and after his disappointing 2023 campaign, the Cowboys may not be too interested in re-signing him, especially given their salary cap situation.

Dallas is then very thin at the position after Pollard, so it will certainly need to make a move or two to address the issue in the coming months.

Well, Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon sees a potential solution for the Cowboys: Austin Ekeler.

Ekeler has spent the first seven years of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers, but he said after the season that he knows he will not be returning to the club in 2024.

That opens the door for teams like Dallas to make a play for the versatile halfback, and he should come at an affordable price following a rather lackluster season.

Ekeler played in 14 games this past year, rushing for 628 yards and five touchdowns while averaging just 3.5 yards per carry. He also caught 51 passes for 436 yards and a score.

Perhaps the 28-year-old is declining, or maybe he just needs a change of scenery.

After all, in 2022, Ekeler registered 915 yards and 13 touchdowns as a rusher, logging 4.5 yards per attempt. In addition, he hauled in 107 receptions for 722 yards while reaching the end zone five times.

Is it possible the Western State product fell off that much in one year? Maybe, but the only way the Cowboys will find out is if they give him a chance.

Dallas is over the salary cap going into the offseason, so it’s not like it will be able to make many big-name signings anyway, if it can make any at all.

Austin Ekeler may be the exact type of risk the Cowboys need to take this spring.
