Shortly after it was learned that Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens would not receive a multiyear contract extension this offseason, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones suggested that he wanted Pickens to answer "questions" while playing on the franchise tag worth roughly $27.3M for the 2026 campaign.
Thus, the perception exists that the Jones family still doesn't fully trust Pickens enough to financially marry the franchise to the 25-year-old beyond the upcoming season. During a recent appearance on the "NFL Spotlight With Ari Meirov" program, Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams had nothing but positive things to say about Pickens.
"George Pickens is George Pickens," Adams explained, per Owen Crisafulli of Heavy. "He is very rarely in a bad mood. He is happy. He loves football. He’s always smiling and laughing. He's got a contagious laugh."
Pickens reportedly caused headaches for the Pittsburgh Steelers throughout his tenure with the organization, which lasted from the 2022 NFL Draft up until he was traded to the Cowboys last offseason. During his first campaign with Dallas, Pickens was reportedly fined at least once for "being late to things."
More recently, Pickens stayed away from the Cowboys throughout the voluntary portion of the offseason program this spring. He reported for mandatory minicamp this week, however, and both he and his agent have confirmed that the wideout will not hold out during training camp.
"Just like any other player," Adams added about Pickens, "there’s gonna be some positives that you deal with, there’s gonna be some negatives that you deal with … I think he felt comfortable in being himself in Dallas."
Pickens signed the franchise tag earlier this spring, and there has been zero indication since the start of the new league year in March that the Cowboys have any interest in trading him before the 2026 season gets underway. Thus, Pickens doesn't really have any other choice but to play for the Cowboys later this year and attempt to earn what he hopes will become a lucrative multiyear contract.
