Last week, the Dallas Cowboys opened wide receiver Jonathan Mingo's practice window in hopes to activate him from Injured Reserve soon. On Wednesday, his full participation on practice made it seem like he was one step closer toward making his 2025 regular season debut but unfortunately, he just hit a speed bump.
On Thursday, Mingo was downgraded to a non-participant in practice. Though the details of the situation are unknown, taking a step back in participation doesn't bode well for his chances of playing in Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers.
Hopefully, it's not a serious setback. Mingo suffered a knee injury in the preseason and started the season on IR. The Cowboys have a couple more weeks to activate him to the 53-man roster after activating his 21-day practice window in Week 5. Otherwise, Mingo would land on season-ending Injured Reserve.

Only one thing is clear about the Cowboys' wide receiver room: When CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are healthy, they're the top two on the depth chart. From there on, everything is blurry. KaVontae Turpin has a unique role on offense as the speed specialist but he's not quite WR3. That role seemed to belong to Jalen Tolbert before Ryan Flournoy's 114-yard receiving performance last weekend. Tolbert has never had a 100-yard receiving game since being drafted by Dallas in 2022.
In training camp and preseason, Mingo was competing with Tolbert for the WR3 job. But after missing so much playing time, things have changed at the WR room. Competition is everywhere and Mingo will need to prove to the coaching staff he deserves a spot among Flournoy and Tolbert.
With that being said, it's also clear the Cowboys believe in him. Otherwise, they wouldn't have traded a fourth-round selection for him last year. But first steps first. Returning to the playing field is Mingo's priority. Hopefully, Thursday's speed bump was just that and nothing serious.
