There were a couple players who saw their stock rise for the Dallas Cowboys in the 31-21 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium and one was receiver Ryan Flournoy.
While he only had one reception for 20 yards, Flournoy was routinely getting open, running crisp and clean routes, with Joe Milton inexplicably overthrowing Ryan, who had acres of space around him, which could have easily been a 40+ yard gain in the third quarter.
Still, despite Flournoy only getting one catch, head coach Brian Schottenheimer noticed the young receiver.
"He's learning to change up some of his releases, which you love, but strong hands and really good with the ball in his hand," Schottenheimer said. "He's the guy [that] broke the tackle on the boundary, right? That was really cool to see. You see their confidence start to blossom when you get going, and the more they play, the more you're like okay, I see it coming together for them."
With the receiver battle a hotly contested one with the third and fourth positions still up in the air, it will be interesting to see who takes their chances.
Flournoy is in a group with Jalen Tolbert, Jonathan Mingo, Jalen Brooks, and Traeshon Holden, who will be fighting for reps, and Schotty revealed the key in moving up the depth chart and getting a spot on the final 53-man roster.
"The big thing for that battle that we talked about is going to be the special teams, and you got to have value on special teams when you're sitting in that spot," he added. "That's why I can't wait to watch that film."
So, the receiver battle isn't close to being finished, and with two preseason games to go, plus practices, at least everyone now knows what must be done.
Yes, you have to haul in your catches and put up good stats, but if you can't play special teams as well, you're not making the team.
