Cowboys Show Faith In Jake Ferguson With Extension
USA TODAY Sports

We had spoken at length regarding the type of season Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson had to have if he were to stick around beyond 2025, as he entered the final year of his deal.

With Ferguson coming off a poor season due to a number of factors, head coach Brian Schottenheimer called it a "fluke," and frankly, so do we. As training camp continues in Oxnard, Ferguson put pen to paper on a four-year, $52 million deal with $30 million guaranteed, as Dallas shows faith in its starting tight end.

A 2023 season that saw him earn a Pro Bowl nod, last year didn't go the way Jake or the Cowboys had hoped, with zero touchdowns caught, but the fact that Dallas still wanted to show faith in the "big biscuit" tells you all you need to know.

Now that his future is sorted, some might say that Ferguson has to become a certain type of player due to the money he's making, but he doesn't subscribe to that thought.

“I don't have a ceiling for myself," Ferguson said. "I try to come in each day with one thing to work on, that's my focus that day. I try to stay where my feet are. Don't try to look too far in the future. Don't try to look too far in the back in the past. So, just being where my feet are and trying to be as consistent as possible. That's my goal."

Needing to re-establish himself in the NFL tight end pecking order, Ferguson was set to be among the better tight ends in football heading into last year; now he has to prove he's capable of doing it again.

The Cowboys have faith in him, and with an offense that now has George Pickens alongside CeeDee Lamb, the middle of the field will be open for Ferguson and Dak Prescott to connect on their seam routes, something the pair have become known for over the years.

Getting an extension, while in a contract year, after the season Ferguson had, shows the Cowboys have the utmost faith in No. 87.

Now it's time to repay that faith, and we bet he'll do just that.
