Cowboys show serious interest in draft target expected to light the NFL Scouting Combine on fire
Ken Ruinard / staff / USA TODAY NETWORK

As the NFL Scouting Combine continues to heat up, the Dallas Cowboys talked with multiple cornerbacks in both informal and formal meetings. Since each NFL team is limited to 45 formal meetings at Indianapolis, which are limited to 18 minutes.

Heading into the 2024 NFL Draft, the Cowboys formally met with a consensus top three cornerback: Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins.

Wiggins is currently ranked as the 16th best overall prospect per the consensus board, which means it'll be complicated for the Cowboys to land him late in the first round. Even more so after he tests at the Combine and delivers on the hype. After all, Wiggins is expected to put on a show after he claimed he can run a 4.27 40-yard dash.

For context, five players in NFL history have run under such a mark, with John Ross' record sitting at a blazing 4.22 in 2017. Clocking in at 4.27 would be right up there with Marquise Goodwin and Henry Ruggs.

Wiggins is A to Z Sports' James Foster's second best corner in the Draft, who describes him as "explosive shifting gears & driving on routes from off coverage with elite mirror skills in single coverage, frequently runs routes for receivers, very disruptive at the catch point, and plays the ball and delivers punishing hits."

Per Nick Harris from DallasCowboys.com, the conversation between Wiggins and the Cowboys centered around his physical profile. There are concerns about the Clemson product's build, as he's slender and needs to add some weight before he plays on Sundays.

Cornerbacks the Cowboys are formally meeting with at Scouting Combine

The Cowboys are meeting with the cornerbacks below at the Combine per Nick Harris from DallasCowboys.com (last updated at Thursday 11:00 a.m. CT):

  • CB Nate Wiggins, Clemson
  • CB Kamari Lassiter, Georgia
  • CB Caelen Carson, Wake Forest
  • CB T.J. Tampa, Iowa State

Do Cowboys have a need at cornerback ahead of 2024 NFL Draft?

The Cowboys have a solid starting duo in DaRon Bland and Trevon Diggs but Stephon Gilmore and Jourdan Lewis are set to hit free agency. Even if one of them is brought back for next season, you can never have too many corners in the league.

If the value is right, the Cowboys could absolutely add a cornerback early in the NFL Draft.
