FRISCO — The Dallas Cowboys' backfield has undergone a complete makeover since the end of the 2024 regular season. At that point, it was essentially a one-man show run by Rico Dowdle. Now, two veterans and two rookies will compete for reps this summer.
Dallas let Dowdle walk in free agency while signing both Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams in that time. The Cowboys then added Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah on Day 3 of the NFL Draft.
So the key theme of the Cowboys' backfield in the coming months will be competition. With that in mind, always-passionate former Cowboys' receiver Dez Bryant is shoving to his former team, urging them to add another back to the mix.
Veteran free agent Nick Chubb remains unsigned following the two biggest talent acquisition periods of the NFL offseason. But Chubb has been in the gym, posting some admittedly impressive footage of himself going through workouts.
Injuries have plagued the past two seasons for Chubb who lost nearly all of his 2023 campaign after a gruesome leg injury. Once positioned to be the Cleveland Browns' bell cow back, it appears they have moved on with two running back draft selections of their own.
Could Chubb be worth the investment for the Cowboys? Dallas has likely done their homework on Chubb, so a post calling him to their attention will not change how the team views him.

At this point, the backfield is crowded with four potential contributors already in the building. If Chubb is to return to an NFL backfield, ideally that means joining a team that has an apparent need for his services.
The validity of the Cowboys backfield is questionable having no evidence of how these acquisitions will translate onto the field. But there simultaneously not a spot for Chubb to be had here.
Maybe those prospects are reconsidered down the road if any injuries arise or any cuts are made. For now though, the Chubb experiment is not happening any time soon.
