It was on Thursday of this week when CowboysCountry.com first reported that the Dallas Cowboys had scheduled a meeting with the agents for free agent defensive back Jourdan Lewis.
A meeting. Not a signing. Not even an offer.
The two sides have met while stationed in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine. But as of Saturday morning. there is no indication of an offer, and a source is clearing up the confusion by telling us that there certainly is no done deal.
"Still very preliminary,'' as one person close to the situation phrased it to us.
The veteran slot cornerback is absolutely on Dallas' wish list in free agency. ... and he's been a bargain over the course of his career here. He was a third-round pick in 2017 who has overcome major injury challenges to earn a reputation as a play-maker, a leader and a talent that far exceeds his size at 5-10 and 190.
What's the truth about the negotiations?
"We're prepared to make it happen,'' agent David Canter tells CowboysCountry.com. "If there is a will, we believe there is a way.''
Lewis signed a one-year, $2.8 million contract with the Cowboys a season ago. If he'll do that again? Dallas would surely jump.
On the other hand, the still-underrated Lewis will turn 30 this summer ... so how many more bites of the financial apple might he get? If he's going to ever cash in, he and Canter will likely want to hear from other bidding teams.
And yet Lewis' wish is clear.
"Always," he said of wanting to re-sign here. "Dallas is my home. My kids were born here. We'd love to have another season here, or a few seasons here. My wife loves it. But I know it's a business, and we don't know what the front office needs."
