Considered the premier team in football through two weeks of play, the Dallas Cowboys were knocked down a few pegs on Sunday when they suffered a shocking upset 28-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
Yet, despite being bested by the Cardinals in nearly every facet of the game, star defender Micah Parsons chalked up the Cowboys' loss to the team simply playing down to their opponents.
"We got to play up to our standard," Parsons told reporters. "We can't play down to (our opponent), and that's what I felt like we did today."
Parsons comments struck a chord with former longtime NFL coach Rex Ryan, who called out the two-time first-team All-Pro selection on Monday's airing of ESPN's "Get Up."
"Total B.S. man. You just got pummeled by that team. They whipped your tail end all over the field right there and you're going to show lack of respect?" Ryan questioned. "To me, that was total disrespect."
Ryan added, "Micah Parsons, I love you as a player, but that was a punk move."
Despite Dallas falling short, Parsons was his typical disruptive self against Arizona, collecting his fourth sack of the season and recording two quarterback hits.
However, the Cardinals used his aggression off the edge to their advantage in the ground game, opting to run at Parsons as opposed to scheming away from him. The results were 222 rushing yards by Arizona, the second-most rushing yards surrendered by a Cowboys defense in Dan Quinn's 37-game tenure as defensive coordinator.
I’ll keep it real- the Cowboys defense lost the game long before Dak Prescott did.

The Cardinals game plan for Micah Parsons was counterintuitively genius and was the difference. See for yourself!#AchoAnswers @CowboysNation pic.twitter.com/miKFYcjdJA
Much has been made about the injuries Dallas has recently endured. Center Tyler Biadasz and guard Zack Martin both missed Sunday's game while cornerback Trevon Diggs was placed on injured reserve after suffering a torn ACL in practice last Thursday.
Injuries to key contributors would prove detrimental to any team. Yet, it's no excuse for a Cowboys squad that entered the Cardinals game as 11.5-point favorites. Injuries are a part of the game, and if Dallas hopes to keep their Super Bowl aspirations alive they'll need to look past the recent blows sustained to their roster and get back to playing winning football.
