Over the weekend, Von Miller and the Cowboys agreed to a one-year deal. The future Hall of Famer is set to offer a boost defensively, and he represents a notable addition late in the offseason.
Owner/general manager Jerry Jones has spoken about Dallas’ willingness to bring in veterans as a sign of confidence in the team’s 2026 outlook. His stance on that front has not changed even after signing Miller. As a result, further moves could be in store.
“I think it’s fair to say that if we could improve it, which is almost a cliche, we would,” Jones said of the Cowboys’ roster (via ESPN’s Todd Archer). “Because again, I’m even more excited today than I was when we started camp that our team is going to be one that if we can have some things go right for us, avoid some injury, we could really be something that we all want to be… So bottom line is the answer is, yes, if we saw something that would help us any place, we’d do it.”
Defensive improvements have been the common theme of the 2026 offseason in Dallas’ case. Plenty of changes have been made in that area, and Jon Machota of the Athletic names cornerback and linebacker as logical positions to target for further acquisitions. With over $17MM in cap space, the Cowboys could certainly afford another short-term free agent signing. A trade could also be something to watch for.
Jones said (via Machota) he would be comfortable if the “opportunity to take a little of the future and put it on this team” were to arise. That echoes his previous remarks on that front and highlights the level of optimism in place regarding the Cowboys’ ability to remain among the league’s most productive teams on offense while taking needed step forward on the other side of the ball. Dallas currently owns one pick in each of the first three rounds of the 2027 draft, along with a pair of sixth-round selections.
It will be interesting to see if any significant moves are made in the coming days based on Jones’ evaluation of the free agent and trade markets. Other teams are of course looking to make depth additions prior to Week 1, but taking a swing with respect to notable acquisitions is clearly on Dallas’ radar deep into the summer.
