Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs says he’s glad Giants exposed defensive weakness, ‘we just got to …’

The Dallas Cowboys earned their first win of the Brian Schottenheimer era in the most dramatic of circumstances, beating the New York Giants in overtime via the cleat of Brandon Aubrey.

Brandon Aubrey nailed two separate walkoff field goals at the end, the first to force overtime and the second to secure the win for the Dallas Cowboys in the most unlikely circumstances.

It was not a day for defenses as Russell Wilson threw for 450 yards, three touchdowns and one crucial overtime interception, while Dak Prescott threw for 361 yards, two touchdowns and one interception too.

Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs found himself targeted by Wilson on several big plays, including a 29-yard Malik Nabers touchdown in the first half.

The absence of Daron Bland, who recently signed a contract extension with the Cowboys, didn’t help their secondary problems, but Diggs was grateful that it was exposed. Here’s why:

Trevon Diggs believes Dallas Cowboys defense is better off after Russell Wilson tore them apart

After trading Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, the Cowboys have been under intense scrutiny to see how they perform without him.

While the Cowboys running game in particular was excellent, the defense shipped 37 points and was torn apart by Wilson. Diggs believes it’s an ideal learning curve, however.

Sourced from The Athletic’s Jon Machota, Diggs said: “We got a lot to clean up on defense, especially with our zone coverages, just being tighter in coverage, the communication piece.

“I feel like we had a lot of blown coverages. We just got to clean that up. A veteran like Russell Wilson is gonna see all the holes and see everything. I feel like he took advantage of the opportunities he had.

“I got to be better. Everyone has to be better… I feel like we needed it. I’m glad that they were throwing the ball like that so we can see how offenses want to attack us, especially with the coverages that we play.

“We got a lot of mixed coverages. So seeing that, we’re gonna be better next time.” “I feel like our confidence is still there. We got all the guys that we need.

“We got everyone that can make plays. We just got to clean up the little stuff. We got the win, but for sure unsatisfied with the performance that we put out there.

“Unsatisfied with my performance, the whole defense as a whole. We’re gonna be back. We’re gonna be good.”

Caleb Williams and Chicago Bears offense up next for the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3

There are two ways of looking at the Week 3 clash between the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys. The first is that it’s an ideal opportunity for Caleb Williams to take his first big step in Ben Johnson‘s offense.

The second is for the Cowboys defense to take those learnings handed out by Russell Wilson and clamp down on a work-in-progress which is nowhere near being finished.

Matt Eberflus will be hoping for the latter, but with Daron Bland’s injury timeline still up in the air, he is down a key weapon in that secondary, while Diggs was well below his level on Sunday.

The Bears just had 52 points put on them by the Detroit Lions, so if Dak Prescott and co. come out to play, it could be a shootout between the two teams.
