Cris Collinsworth: Former Cowboys First Round Pick in Danger of Being Cut After Missing Eagles Game

The Dallas Cowboys headed to Philadelphia to take on the 2024-25 Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night in a marquee nationally televised game that kicked off the 2025-26 NFL season.

Dallas jumped out to an early lead behind two touchdowns from running back Javonte Williams, who feasted against a depleted Eagles defense that lost star defensive tackle Jalen Carter before the game for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Carter was ejected and could miss future games if he is suspended for his action.

During the game, NBC color analyst Cris Collinsworth and play-by-play man Mike Tirico also addressed the strong likelihood that a former first round pick out of Michigan could find himself back on the job market in the coming days as he could be let go by GM and owner Jerry Jones' team.

Mazi Smith Could Be Released After Thursday Scratch

"Mazi Smith (the Cowboys') first round pick from 2023 is inactive, he's a healthy scratch here tonight," Tirico said, setting the table for Collinsworth's analysis.

"Yeah, and if you're inactive with what they've got at defensive tackle, that's as close to being cut as you're going to be, they've got Solomon Thomas and a rookie in Jay Toia...It's quite the statement about your former number one pick," Collinsworth added about the team's defensive tackle out of Michigan.

Smith was selected in large part because of his combine measurables as he stands 6-feet, 3 inches tall and weighs 337 pounds with impressive speed and athleticism for a man his size.

His at times up-and-down, uneven play has included flashes of brilliance including 41 tackles, a sack and 5.5 stuffs last season.

He slimmed down heading into this season but has dealt with knee soreness that has at times limited him or forced him out of practice.

Weather Delay in Eagles-Cowboys Game

A thunderstorm warning caused a delay in Thursday night's game at the 4:44 mark of the third quarter with the defending champion Eagles leading 24-20 over Brian Schottenheimer's Cowboys.

Nick Sirianni's team brought a depleted defense into the game without Carter and did its best to keep its head above water as Jalen Hurts carried the offense early.

Hurts had nearly 160 combined yards passing and rushing along with two rushing touchdowns while Saquon Barkley had 11 carries for 61 yards and a score on the ground.

The Cowboys were led by Williams' two scores on the ground along with 86 receiving yards from CeeDee Lamb and two field goals from kicker Brandon Aubrey.

The Smith news came as a Cowboys cheerleader grabbed plenty of attention ahead of Thursday's game for an excited on-field video clip.

Prescott got a strong message from his fiance Sara Ramos.

Smith has a world of talent but hasn't come close to reaching his full potential in Dallas.

A change of scenery may do him good, and is now a strong likelihood with former Packer and Cowboys newcomer Kenny Clark on the field making plays in his Dallas debut on Thursday.
