Dak Prescott shuts down legacy talk, doubles down on goal as Cowboys QB

Dak Prescott is nearly a decade into his NFL career, entering his ninth season. All have been spent with the Dallas Cowboys as the starting quarterback. Ups and downs have been prevalent throughout but postseason success has eluded Prescott. For now, his legacy is likely tied to failing to get the Cowboys past the Divisional round.

Legacy was a topic of conversation that came up on Thursday when Prescott spoke to reporters. He does not believe anything has been determined yet and will not be until retirement. One thing is on his mind, though. Prescott knows he wants to win a Super Bowl in Dallas and for multiple reasons.

“I want to win a championship,” Prescott said. “The legacy and things and whatever comes after I finish playing will take care of itself. I want to win a championship. I’ll be damned if it’s just for my legacy or for this team or for my personal being, for my sanity. The legacy will take care of itself. I have to stay where my feet are.”

Dallas has gone to the playoffs on five occasions with Prescott as the starting quarterback. Only two wins are on the resume, both in the Wild Card round. Prescott owns a career 0-3 record in the Divisional Round. The other two losses have come in the Wild Card, most recently after the 2023 season in a blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers.

And when you are playing for a franchise like the Cowboys, your legacy is determined by championships. Guys like Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman will be remembered forever due to their on-field success. Every quarterback in Dallas has been chasing those two guys ever since.

Prescott is no different. He will have another attempt during the 2025 season, a new era for him. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer has taken over as the head coach after previously serving as the offensive coordinator. Winning has been at the front of his mind from the beginning and continues to be a theme when speaking to reporters.

Based on these comments from Prescott, he is in lockstep with his new head coach. Winning a Super Bowl is top priority for multiple reasons. Prescott will have the satisfaction later in life of delivering his championship while knowing his legacy will also be secure down the road. All focus is on accomplishing the goal as the team wraps up minicamps.
