The Dallas Cowboys have a lot of holes to fill on the defensive side of the ball in 2026, but they also have a couple of free agents the franchise says it "needs" to keep going into next season.
Two of Dallas' biggest offensive contributors are set to hit the market at the start or the new league year, and they were a massive reason why the Cowboys ranked second in yards and seventh in points, respectively.
Those players are George Pickens and Javonte Williams, who Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones says are must haves for the team in free agency.
In an interview with the Forth Worth Star-Telegram, Jones opened up about Dallas' offseason plans and why Pickens and Williams are two names that are a high priority for them.
“Obviously, there’s guys that we want to keep from last year,” Jones said Tuesday. “Whether it’s George Pickens or it’s Javonte [Williams], those are all guys that play into the free agency picture. We’ve got work to do on the defensive side of the ball. Whether that’s through free agency or the draft, there’s a lot of resources there that we can use to make our defense better.”
As far as Pickens, negotiations have yet to start with the star receiver they acquired from Pittsburgh. While discussions have reportedly already gotten underway with Williams who signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the 'Boys last March.
“We won’t get into any details right now. Certainly, we want George to be back here in Dallas, and we’ll certainly go from there,” Jones explained. “We’ve certainly visited with Javonte. We haven’t had a lot of those visits. Most of those happen at the combine. Obviously, we still have some time before free agency starts. We’re always visiting the representatives about our players.”
Jones wasn't the only name connected to the Cowboys making headlines this week. Last night, legendary Dallas head coach Jimmy Johnson had some harsh words for the Pro Football Hall of Fame voters who passed over Bill Belichick on the first ballot.
“I would like to know the names of the a—holes who did not vote for him,” the two-time Super Bowl champ posted to X. “They are too cowardly to identify themselves…”
“As a HOF coach I think Bill Belichick is the greatest of all time…yes he had a great QB but we all did. He won AFTER THE salary cap and free agency plus I know how much he LOVES THE NFL and the game," he added. "I’m pissed…”
“This is just WRONG, 2 winning ALL TIME…more Super Bowls than anyone unimaginable number of division championships…lot of small jealous voters,” Johnson concluded.

The Cowboys went 7-9-1 in their first season under Brian Schottenheimer — which honestly surpassed a lot of people's expectations going into the year. Still though, there's lots of room for improvement and it starts with lifting the 30th ranked defense closer to the middle of the pack.
