Former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Scott Tolzien's time coaching with the Dallas Cowboys appears to have come to an end.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the former Wisconsin quarterback is expected to move on from the Cowboys coaching staff following the expiration of his contract after the 2024 season.
Notably, Tolzien worked under head coach Mike McCarthy before Jerry Jones chose to go another direction and promote Brian Schottenheimer.
Tolzien had served as the Cowboys' quarterbacks coach since 2022, helping Dak Prescott put together an impressive 2023 campaign. Under Tolzien's direction, Prescott posted career-best numbers, completing 69.5% of his passes for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and just interceptions.
However, Prescott's 2024 season was derailed by a hamstring injury, limiting him to eight games. Backup Cooper Rush stepped in and delivered a respectable 4-4 record with a 12-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio, further showcasing Tolzien's ability to develop quarterbacks.
Before joining the Cowboys, Tolzien spent two seasons as an offensive assistant and began his coaching career as an analyst at Wisconsin in 2019. His transition into coaching followed a seven-year NFL playing career, primarily as a backup with the San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers, and Indianapolis Colts.
Tolzien's time at Wisconsin (2006-10) remains a hallmark of his football resume. As the starter in 2009 and 2010, he led the Badgers to a combined 21-5 record, throwing for 5,271 yards, 32 touchdowns, and completing a program record 68.1% of his passes.
While his next coaching destination is unknown, Tolzien's reputation as a developer of quarterbacks ensures he won't be out of work for long.
