The Dallas Cowboys offense is set to receive a spark from an explosive rookie in Week 5 that's bound to make his NFL regular season debut against the New York Jets.
Though not official yet, head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters Blue is "trending" to play Sunday. The Cowboys are navigating injuries to running back Miles Sanders and kick returner/wide receiver KaVontae Turpin, two players who play roles Blue fits in.
Schottenheimer was asked if Blue's expected debut is the product of injuries or if the running back is finally showing the consistency the coaching staff has asked of him. Blue has been a healthy scratch for the first four weeks of the regular season in large part due to consistency, per the coach's past comments.
"More because of what Jaydon has done, I've been hard on Jaydon in the past and talking about the word consistency, he's been way more consistent," Schottenheimer told reporters. "He's showing up, he's really done a great job mastering what we're trying to do from a scheme standpoint, we're really pleased with him."
Even still, Schottenheimer joked with reporters about a rookie moment from Blue on Thursday's practice when he took the field with new Louis Vuitton Nikes. The shoes gave him blisters and had to change them immediately.
"That's part of what you deal with with young players," Schottenheimer said.
Don't start him on Fantasy Football would be my advise but mostly because of workload. The Cowboys' starting running back Javonte Williams has grown into the team's cowbell and he has compensated the team for its trust. He's been one of the most efficient backs in the NFL through four weeks. However, there's no denying Blue provides something Williams doesn't: Top-notch acceleration and speed.
With the way the Cowboys have been blocking the run as a team, Blue could run into some pretty big opportunities to get a house call Sunday. The Cowboys own the third-best run blocking grade per PFF and that's because of the OL, TEs and WRs, as the clip below shows.

Additionally, the Cowboys have been using pulling blockers and pre-snap motion to make life easier on their running backs. It also opens the door for explosive gains, which Blue is made for. Blue will need to take care of the ball—one of his weaknesses at college—but if he does, it wouldn't be a surprise if he wows the audience in his first game action.
"I'm very excited," Blue told reporters about his imminent debut via The Athletic's Jon Machota. "I was waiting for my time. I stayed patient. I was told to trust the process. I knew eventually if I stayed consistent and worked hard that time would come.”
