The Dallas Cowboys have one of the most explosive offensive teams so far this season, but have lost one of the pieces to making the offense move the chains for the remainder of the 2025 season. This does not come as much of a surprise after seeing the injury, but this is going to be a blow to lose a former Pro Bowl player for the season. Let’s take a deeper dive into who it is and what this means for the Dallas Cowboys going forward.

Dallas Cowboys Lose Miles Sanders for 2025 Season

On Friday, Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told 105.3 The Fan that running back Miles Sanders would require season-ending surgery on his left knee. The knee injury has been known about as he was dealing with an issue with his knee during training camp, but was able to play in the first four games of the season. However, he was forced to miss the Week 5 game against the New York Jets and could not finish practice on Wednesday.

ESPN’s Todd Archer is reporting that Sanders underwent a chondral tissue graft surgery, the same surgery that cornerback Trevon Diggs had in January. Sanders signed a one-year, $1.337 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys this offseason after spending the previous two years with the Carolina Panthers. In four games this season, he ran 20 times for 117 yards (5.9 yards per carry) with a rushing touchdown as well as catching all eight targets for 30 yards (3.8 yards per reception).

Sanders was named to the Pro Bowl in 2022 with the Philadelphia Eagles, but has failed to find the same success since then. For the Cowboys, they currently have Javonte Williams and rookie Jaydon Blue in their backfield as depth. They can also elevate running back Malik Davis from their practice squad or search other team’s practice squads and free agency to replace the 28-year-old.
