Dallas Cowboys website causes Jadeveon Clowney number confusion

One day into his tenure as a Dallas Cowboy, there is already controversy surrounding defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. Thankfully nothing too serious, just over what number the defensive player will be wearing. Two different official sources from the Cowboys have listed different answers.

“New Cowboys DE Jadeveon Clowney listed as No. 96 on the team’s latest roster,” The Athletic‘s Jon Machota said via X. “But he’s No. 42 on the updated depth chart.”

Most spots from Clowney resulted in him dawning something in the 90s. His number with the Houston Texans after being picked No. 1 overall in the draft was 90. A switch-up came in Tennessee and then for two seasons in Cleveland, going with 99. The Ravens let Clowney take on No. 24 before Cleveland gave him the No. 7 — the first time he wore something in the single digits.

Three of those four are currently occupied by somebody on the roster. If Clowney wanted, 99 is available for the taking. But it appears as if 96 or 42 will wind up being the final answer.

If nothing official comes from the team, we likely will find out on Sunday. Clowney plans to play for the Cowboys during the Week 3 matchup against the Chicago Bears. He does not have any worries about ramping up, just wanting to go out there and play football. Either way, No. 42 or No. 96 can be seen chasing after Caleb Williams.

Jadeveon Clowney believes he still has plenty left in the tank

Two weeks into the season, the Dallas Cowboys have a reinforcement on the way. Clowney signed with the team on Monday, making it his 12th NFL season. Many wonder how much longer the former No. 1 overall pick can play. But Clowney is quite confident in himself.

“I got seven primetime games to prove and show the world,” Clowney said via Machota. “That was my whole thought on coming down here. I get to play primetime and put myself out there again. Sky is the limit again for me. I don’t feel like I’m getting old. Terence Crawford just beat somebody at (37) years old. I got a lot left in the tank.”

Clowney is not quite 37 years old like Crawford, who beat Canelo Álvarez in a boxing match on Saturday night. He turned 32 back in February, on Valentine’s Day, but still draws inspiration. Getting another five years would be quite the accomplishment.
