Dan Campbell Compares Jeff Hafley’s Dolphins to Lions Rebuild
The Miami Dolphins may be sitting at 1-6, but Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell sees something familiar when he watches Jeff Hafley’s young football team.
As the Dolphins prepare to host the Lions this Sunday, Campbell offered some encouraging words about the direction Miami is heading under its first-year head coach. Campbell believes the Dolphins resemble his own Detroit team in the early stages of its rebuild.
According to NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk, Campbell praised the effort, physicality, and overall approach Hafley has brought to Miami, even if those improvements haven’t yet translated into victories.
Campbell knows firsthand what it takes to rebuild a struggling NFL franchise.
When he arrived in Detroit in 2021, the Lions finished his first season 3-13-1. However, the foundation being established behind the scenes eventually produced significant results.
Detroit improved to 9-8 in Campbell’s second season before reaching the NFC Championship Game in his third year.
Now, Campbell sees similarities between that rebuilding process and what Hafley is attempting to accomplish in Miami.
Speaking about the Dolphins, Campbell praised Hafley for his first-season work. He specifically highlighted Miami’s youth, hunger, physicality, hustle, and willingness to finish plays.
Those comments stand out given the Dolphins’ struggles this season.
While Miami hasn’t consistently found ways to win football games, Campbell clearly sees a team developing the characteristics that helped transform Detroit into a contender.
The two coaches’ admiration appears to be mutual.
During his Wednesday press conference, Hafley praised Campbell and the culture he has built in Detroit.
Hafley pointed to the Lions’ physical style of football, their emphasis on building strong offensive and defensive lines, and their ability to draft and develop talent.
When asked about Campbell’s famously aggressive mentality and whether that style resembles what he wants in Miami, Hafley made it clear that he believes his team is already moving in that direction.
Despite Miami’s disappointing record, Hafley believes the Dolphins are building a foundation of toughness, effort, and players committed to one another.
For Hafley, those characteristics are essential to creating a winning organization.
The Dolphins have committed significantly to younger players this season, and the coaching staff continues to emphasize development over chasing short-term results.
The comparison between Miami and Detroit is encouraging, but it misses an important distinction.
The Lions eventually turned their rebuild into wins. The Dolphins still have a long way to go before they can claim similar success.
Miami’s 1-6 record reflects a team that still struggles with consistency, execution, and finishing games. Sunday’s 24-19 loss to the New England Patriots was another frustrating example, as the Dolphins couldn’t protect a lead.
However, Campbell’s identified similarities are significant.
Building a winning culture doesn’t happen overnight. It requires establishing expectations, identifying the right players, developing young talent, and creating an identity that can survive difficult stretches.
Hafley has repeatedly emphasized those same principles since arriving in Miami.
The challenge will be turning those strengths into a team capable of competing for playoff appearances and, eventually, championships.
The timing of Campbell’s comments is somewhat ironic.
On Sunday, the Dolphins will face the very organization Hafley hopes to emulate.
Detroit represents what can happen when a franchise commits to a long-term vision, remains patient through early struggles, and successfully builds its roster around a clear identity.
Miami is still early in that process.
For Dolphins fans frustrated by another losing season, Campbell’s comments offer some perspective. One of the NFL’s most respected head coaches recognizes qualities in Miami that he once saw in his own team.
That doesn’t guarantee Hafley will enjoy the same success Campbell eventually experienced in Detroit.
But it does suggest that, despite the losses, the Dolphins may be establishing some of the necessary building blocks for a brighter future.
The real test will come over the next several seasons, when Hafley and the Dolphins must prove that the foundation they’re building can produce something more than encouraging words.
