Dan Campbell explains what happened with Lions' running back Jahmyr Gibbs' weird NFL record he set on Sunday

Believe it or not, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs set a record on Sunday night. It wasn't a record that anyone could have possibly wanted to set, but it was a record nonetheless. Gibbs had 10 catches on Sunday, and those 10 catches went for 31 yards. That was the fewest yards that any player has ever had with 10 catches. Awesome right? Nah, not really.

This had everyone wondering what the heck happened with Gibbs in this game. Why did he get the ball so much, and how did he not do anything with it? The answer to both questions is really the same. It was all about the offensive line.

The Lions walked into this game with a plan, and that plan was to open up the pass game and take the deep shots that they had spent all summer working on. The Packers knew that, and they had a plan to stop it. The Lions' plan to counter that was to check down to the running back. Seriously, that was what Lions head coach Dan Campbell said.

We preached to Goff Man, if it's not there, check it down. Check it down." Campbell said on Monday. "And even if you're wanting to take one of those, because we had them called, we had a couple of times now where these things are dialed up, you gotta have time to get it out there. And I thought (Goff) did a good job of knowing, 'I've got to get rid of this now' and taking what was there."

Every time the Lions tried it, it didn't work, and Goff checked down to Gibbs. Then Gibbs couldn't do anything because there was a man in his face every single time, and it turned into nothing. That's not usually the case for Gibbs, but it was on this day. It's as simple as that.

The offensive line couldn't hold up long enough to get the play off, and they couldn't hold up long enough to allow Gibbs to make a play when the check-down happened. Frankly, nobody really blocked well outside of Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta. But they're both out of place on these because they're out there trying for the big pass. It was just a mess all around.
