Dan Campbell peeled back the curtain on Lions' gutsiest call vs. Ravens

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has earned a reputation as one of the very best offensive coaches in the game thanks to his unbridled aggression, and that mindset may have helped his team move to 2-1 on the season after a terrific Monday Night Football win against the Baltimore Ravens.

While there were multiple plays that stood out as classic Campbell, the highlight of the night involved Jared Goff throwing down the field to Amon-Ra St. Brown on fourth-and-two from a very disadvantageous position. A connection ices the game, and a loss is a complete catastrophe.

Campbell seemingly had no problem leaning on his franchise quarterback and his top wide receiver as he tried to make a play, saying that they have earned the trust necessary to warrant a conversion attempt when most coaches would have done things by the book and taken the ball out of their hands.

Even after a start to the season that made Goff look like nothing more than a very expensive Ben Johnson merchant, the Lions have since corrected themselves and shown they can hang with any team in the league, even if they have to go on the road in primetime.

Lions coach Dan Campbell explains Jared Goff's clutch fourth down conversion

After looking totally overwhelmed in a Week 1 defeat against the Green Bay Packers, Goff has now thrown eight touchdown passes over the last two weeks to take the lead across the NFL. Detroit's offense is humming, as they have scored 90 points in the last two games.

Playing a Baltimore defense that was without top pass rusher Kyle Van Noy and defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike, the Lions made sure to bear them up in the trenches. Once the tone was firmly set there, Campbell and new OC John Morton sat back and let Goff do his thing.

Between that gutsy call and a fourth-down option play that saw Sr. Brown pitch the ball to running back Jahmyr Gibbs for a score, Detroit certainly emptied their proverbial creativity tank in this one. With Lamar Jackson scoring three times despite taking seven sacks, they needed it.

While the Lions may need one or two more wins against contenders to solidify their status as one of the very best teams in the NFL this season, the fact that Campbell remains as fearless as ever should be an invaluable tool for this team.
