It's been doom and gloom for the Washington Commanders' ever-growing injury concerns in recent weeks. But amid all the darkness, a glimmer of light is emerging.

The Commanders are experiencing significant turmoil on the health front. Several established figures are out for the year. A few more are on injured reserve. Jayden Daniels' status for Week 4 remains in doubt, and wide receiver Terry McLaurin's issue is also causing great concern.

This isn't ideal, especially considering the Commanders are trying to emulate their sensational accomplishments last season. Quinn is trying to tread water until better fortune arrives, but when that'll be is anyone's guess.

Commanders are seeing strong progress from Sam Cosmi as return nears

There was some slightly encouraging news from Quinn's latest appearance before the media. The coach revealed that stud right guard Sam Cosmi is making substantial progress in his recovery from a torn ACL. However, he didn't disclose whether the interior force would be activated from injured reserve when eligible for the first time next week.

But he was hopeful.

Regardless of whether Cosmi is activated or not, it might not be much longer before he ramps up his recovery. It remains a step-by-step process that the Commanders will handle with care. But this represents a slight positive amid the chaos.

Cosmi's presence is greatly missed. The former Texas standout suffered a torn ACL during Washington's memorable divisional round win over the Detroit Lions. It was always going to be a long recovery, but he's hitting the targets expected, and confidence is rising about his participation sooner rather than later.

The Commanders have already shaken up their offensive line interior after this season. Things were not working out effectively enough wth Nick Allegretti and Brandon Coleman at the guard spots. Andrew Wylie and Chris Paul stepped into the breach versus the Las Vegas Raiders, and things looked much more assured. That could be the route Washington takes moving forward, but Cosmi's return would take things up another notch.

Nobody is getting too carried away. Cosmi will need a few weeks to get into genuine football shape once he receives the all-clear to practice. And the Commanders are not going to force the issue until there is 100 percent confidence that there will be no lingering problems.

Cosmi established himself as a cornerstone of the franchise. He's one of the league's most underrated guards, but his importance to the Commanders' long-term outlook cannot be overstated.

This is the most positive development yet. There is still a long way to go, but all signs are pointing up, at least with one of Washington's injury problems.
