Dan Quinn has been around football for a long time. He's a vastly experienced leader of men who was the perfect head coach to lead the Washington Commanders' exciting new era. This also enables him to make informed decisions under extreme game-time pressure.
Another fine example of this arrived in Week 6 against the Chicago Bears. It seemed innocuous — and somewhat strange — at the time, but Quinn knows to cover every single base in pursuit of helping his team.
With the Bears marching downfield, they gained one yard on a short pass to running back D'Andre Swift. It was first down, and Quinn challenged the official decision, all for the sake of a solitary yard.
He was successful, but many in the audience wondered if there was any point in wasting a challenge in that relatively irrelevant situation. However, it was a gamble that worked in the Commanders' favor when push came to shove.
As it turned out, the Bears went for it on 4th-and-1. Ben Johnson called a passing play despite Chicago's rushing attack dominating the field. Williams couldn't make the play, and the NFC North club turned it over on downs.
All thanks to the one yard that Quinn saved with his challenge.
This is a game of inches, as Al Pacino's character famously said in Any Given Sunday. Quinn knows that all too well and used it to his advantage.
Washington's fearless leader has been around long enough to know how the finest margins can make the most significant differences. The Commanders went from giving up a first down to securing the football back, thanks in no small part to Quinn's bravery. And it's what sets him apart from most head coaches in the league.
Nothing is a moot point. Nothing is classed as unworthy of being contested. It typifies the fighting spirit and meticulous attention to detail that have become synonymous with the Commanders since Quinn took charge.
And it's a trend that isn't going to stop anytime soon.
