It wasn't pretty at times, but the Washington Commanders began their quest for a Super Bowl with a comfortable home victory over the New York Giants. And as fans know, the result is all that mattered in Week 1.
Head coach Dan Quinn agreed. And he made his stance on one major contributor abundantly clear.
The Commanders need a collective effort from everybody if they want to dethrone the Philadelphia Eagles. Adam Peters worked hard to fortify the trenches on both sides of the football this offseason. And based on initial impressions, the general manager has once again made the right investments.
Washington's protection coped extremely well with a vaunted Giants defensive front. The defensive line was causing havoc from start to finish. But it was another high-profile acquisition from Peters that arguably caught the eye above all else.
Deebo Samuel Sr. wasted no time in making his presence felt. The wide receiver was criticized heavily throughout the offseason for his commitment and conditioning, but the fifth-round pick given up to acquire him already looks like a steal.
Quinn is a believer. There were a couple of plays left out on the field, but the head coach was highly encouraged by Samuel's initial showing and his overall fit in Kliff Kingsbury's schematic concepts.
He's a lot of fun to coach. He plays aggressive. Downhill. We missed some, so we'll be wanting to look at those, but also the touchdown run, which was quintessential him. We've seen that movie, you know what that looks like, and how we can feature it in this offense. I think that was part of the reasoning with the trade and why it was such a good fit. When you see what somebody can do, and you know how to put that into the offense, that's a blend of scouting and coaching.Dan Quinn

Samuel led the Commanders with seven receptions from 10 targets for 77 receiving yards. The South Carolina product also found the end zone on his only carry, which went for 19 yards. This is exactly what the Commanders had in mind, and it alleviated any remaining concerns about how much the wideout has left in the tank.
This is an imposing start for Samuel. Keeping it up and maintaining high performance levels throughout the campaign remains the primary objective. But if the All-Pro maintains and potentially exceeds this lofty bar, the Commanders' offense will be immensely difficult to overcome.
There is a long way to go and a lot of football left, but things couldn't have gone much better for Samuel on his road to redemption.
