D’Andre Swift appears safe as Chicago Bears lead runner

Chicago Bears running back D’Andre Swift coughed up a costly fumble against the New York Jets. From there, he entered Ben Johnson’s doghouse, not seeing a carry the rest of the way.

However, the head coach isn’t holding any grudges. Back on Monday, Johnson made it clear he’s taking a next-play mentality, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

“We all have to have short memories,” Johnson said Monday. “We’ve got to learn from it, and coaches, players, all of us, we’re going to do some things that we don’t like at times. Could be a bad play call on my end, could be a missed tackle by our defense. All of those things happen. Learn from it and move on.”

Since then, Swift has also owned up to his ball security mistake. Rather than dwell on it though, all parties are focusing on fixing any of those mistakes in Week 5.

Chicago Bears still need D’Andre Swift

Through the first four weeks of the season, Swift leads the Bears with 69 rushing attempts. He is tied for the team lead in rushing touchdowns (three) with Kyle Monangai and has run f0r 311 yards total. Swift remains a valuable resource for Chicago. The franchise isn’t going to take the ball out of his hands, Biggs argues.

“Swift probably remains the option that gets the most use in base downs, and he has more value in the passing game too,” Biggs wrote. “The play on which Swift lost the ball Sunday was really uncharacteristic of him because he’s not usually one to be sloppy with the football, but in this instance that’s exactly what happened.”

Johnson has made himself clear that fumbles are unacceptable. But Swift is a proven commodity in the NFL. The Bears signed him to a three-year extension prior to the season due to their belief in him. One turnover won’t change that.

Still, Swift is well aware he must hold onto the ball. He’ll look to make up for the error in Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers.
