After the playoff loss, D’Andre Swift made it clear he was coming back to the Chicago Bears. However, on Thursday, his enthusiasm ran into a wall.

Swift had to be taken out of practice due to experiencing what is being described as “significant discomfort,” per Adam Schefter of ESPN. Sources told Schefter that Swift was cramping.

This is not a good sign for the Bears as they head into the season. It’s especially alarming given the skill Swift brings to the table. He has been the focal point of the Chicago running game and, overall, the primary playmaker.

Last year, Swift accumulated 1,087 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns on 223 carries. Not only that, but Swift is strong in the passing game as well. Last year, he had 34 receptions for a total of 299 yards and a touchdown.

In 2024, Swift signed a three-year, $24 million contract with Chicago.

Lately, head coach Ben Johnson has kept Swift off the sideline during the Bears’ preseason schedule to keep him healthy for the regular season. If his discomfort becomes something serious, Chicago will turn to Kyle Monangai as the primary backup.

During training camp, Swift has had some standout moments. Among those was rushing for a 62-yard touchdown during Day 12.

The Bears are about to begin a season in which they are looking to build on their NFC North title. Despite some big names uprooting during the offseason and a questionable offensive line, the Bears are still slated to do big things.

The first game is on Sept. 13 against the Carolina Panthers.
