The Indianapolis Colts were expected to have one of the most captivating stories of the NFL offseason with their prospective quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones.

Unfortunately for the former, he suffered an injury in the infancy of team activities to the same shoulder he required season-ending surgery on during his rookie season.

The team is cautiously optimistic that Richardson will be back on the field by the start of training camp, but this month and a half that he’s missing in between will be detrimental to his starting chances.

His absence allows Jones to capitalize on taking all the first team reps and he is already taking advantage according to reports.

The Colts’ mandatory minicamp began on Tuesday, and the former New York Giants quarterback was incredibly efficient and accurate

In 7-on-7s and 11-on-11s, Jones combined to complete 9/13 passes with six touchdowns and no turnovers.

One of the biggest knocks on the former Duke product is his inability or unwillingness to push the ball down the field, but a lot of his touchdowns in minicamp have come on fairly deep passes.

In all fairness, he has also never had any solid receiving options on the outside, so perhaps the cavalcade of weapons in Indianapolis are already impacting Jones’ ability.

Luckily for Richardson, the brunt of the work for the offseason will be invested during training camp, so he isn’t missing a whole lot by being absent for minicamp.

Still, he needs every break he can get to retain his starting job this season and he is already opening the season behind the eight ball.
