Davante Adams became one of the most coveted players in free agency following his release from the New York Jets.
Although Adams is getting up there in age, he remains a wildly productive receiver on the field which is why head coach Sean McVay recruited him so heavily to join the Los Angeles Rams. Adams was swayed enough by McVay that he agreed to a two-year deal, effectively replacing Cooper Kupp and giving Puka Nacua a legitimate running mate.
Adams has been doing his part to get up to speed as quickly as possible as he’s been present for voluntary workouts and OTAs. During practice, he’s gotten a chance to work with and get to know Matthew Stafford better and develop some chemistry going into training camp.
Stafford has a reputation for being a gunslinger when passing the football and Adams is quickly learning that he needs to expect the ball no matter what route he runs, via Stu Jackson of TheRams.com:
“He doesn’t care what that coverage says,” Adams said. “If they’re not playing that coverage right, you might still get the ball. So everybody at all times has got to make sure… it’s never just for the love of the game. I’m sure everybody’s heard of those routes where you’re kind of designed to clear out or maybe, based on a certain coverage, you’ll be eliminated. That isn’t how he rolls. You’ve got to be a dog to do that. You’ve got to have a lot of confidence in your arm, in who’s across from you, who you’re throwing the ball to, all of that.”
Adams inadvertently references a route that Kupp ran in the 2022 NFL Playoffs against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when Stafford hit him downfield to set up the game-winning field goal. Adams might be used to running routes for the sake of a play, but in L.A. there’s more than decent chance that Stafford will throw him the football if he happens to be open.
Stafford’s confidence in his arm sometimes gets him into trouble, but there aren’t many quarterbacks in the NFL that can sling it like he can when he has it going. Watching Stafford and Adams connect on the field will be exciting for fans to watch and hopefully it leads to plenty of wins.
Davante Adams was wasting away with the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets, so it’s no surprise that he’s already feeling rejuvenated with the Rams.
