Bryce Huff surprised many when he elected to retire in March. The veteran pass rusher opted to end his NFL career, but that move was aimed at focusing on his entrepreneurial efforts.

During an interview with The Athletic’s Vic Tafur, Huff revealed that he and his brother Jordan have been making progress in building their company, Naberstone. Their efforts are based on finding an environmentally-friendly product for extinguishing fires which include lithium-ion batteries. Huff has used his NFL earnings to fund the company, which is focused on scaling up in the near future.

“Going into the NFL, I couldn’t really put my love for engineering to good use,” Huff said. “But now I feel like since we’re working with engineers on a day-to-day basis, it’s just as good as actually being an engineer myself.”

Huff noted he had already been contemplating retirement when he was traded from the Eagles to the 49ers last year. The 28-year-old wound up making 15 appearances and eight starts in San Francisco while the team dealt with several injuries along the edge. Huff said the decision to walk away from the remaining money on his contract was an easy one, with his attention having already turned to his business venture. In all, he amassed roughly $40MM in earnings across six years in the league.

“I knew we would be able to help a lot of people, and the monetary upside was there as well,” Huff added when reflecting on his 2025 situation. “So I feel like it was kind of making sense [to retire] back then, but even more so after this season with how much traction we’ve gained over the last year.”

Huff’s 24 career sacks certainly suggest he could have continued playing in 2026 and beyond. Instead, his business endeavors will become his sole focus moving forward as Naberstone aims to continue growing.
