Deebo Samuel has a cocky response to whether he’d term Eagles-49ers as a rivalry: 'I consider rivalries close games'
Lucas Peltier-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers are currently preparing for their Super Bowl game against the Kansas City Chiefs, which is scheduled to take place this weekend. Ahead of the game, the Niners wide receiver Deebo Samuel couldn’t resist taking shots at their NFC rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles.

During the Super Bowl LVIII opening night festivities on Monday, the 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel was asked by reporters about his team’s rivalry with the Philadelphia-based football team. Samuel replied by taking a savage dig at the Eagles while referring to their week 13 game.

I consider rivalries close games. We ain’t going to talk about that no more. That’s over with. Deebo Samuel told the media

Samuel was seemingly referring to the regular season game between the Eagles and the Niners during week 13. The highly-anticipated game ended up being a blowout and the 49ers completely dominated Jalen Hurts‘ squad from start to finish. In the end, they ended up winning the game 42-19 in a massive way.

Samuel has always had similar feeling towards the Eagles. When the 49ers lost their NFC championship game against the Eagles last year, the Niners wide receiver claimed that if Brock Purdy didn’t get hurt in that game, it wouldn’t have been even a close game. His statement came true when both teams met during the 2023 regular season.

Nonetheless, despite everyone’s expectations, the 49ers and the Eagles couldn’t meet again in the playoffs as the Philly-based franchise got bounced off the postseason in the first round following a humiliating loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Still, Samuel keeps their rivalry alive in case they end up meeting again next season.

Deebo Samuel can talk the talk and walk the walk

The 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel is not the one to shy away from trash talks. Over the years, he has been involved in beef with several players, but he can always back his trash talks with his on-field performance.

Following a down year in 2022 because of injuries, Samuel bounced back nicely and registered 1117 scrimmage yards and 12 total touchdowns during the 2023 NFL season. He also played a big part in the Niners’ victory over the Detroit Lions in the NFC championship game.

He is one of the most versatile players in the league and is a great asset for Brock Purdy and the San Francisco-based football team. Nonetheless, he would be now focused on helping his team secure a victory against the Chiefs this Sunday to win his first-ever Super Bowl ring.
