Denver Broncos sign a linebacker to add to the great competition we are already seeing this offseason
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos have a much better defense than people think heading into 2024. Sure, last year was pretty bad throughout the season. They had good moments, but they also had bad, like giving up 70 points to the Miami Dolphins.

But, I think this defense will surprise people in 2024. One of the position groups that may be the most surprising is the linebacker spot, where there are more spots wide open than you would think. At the Mike linebacker position, three guys are competing for that spot, and one of them is an undrafted free agent Levelle Bailey.

“I think all of those guys [are competing]," Sean Payton said during the mandatory minicamp. "We have a young guy from Fresno [Bailey]. All three of those guys are competing at Mike," Payton said following the first day of mandatory minicamp. "We’re rotating their reps, much the same way [as we are at] quarterback. We’ll continue to do that.”

On Thursday the Broncos made another signing to add to the competition in that position group that we are seeing. With Drew Sanders out for the year, there was no reason not to add another guy, just to see what he can do.

According to Jodan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the Broncos signed former Atlanta Falcons linebacker Andre Smith. In 19 games last year with the Falcons, Smith finished with 19 tackles and one forced fumble along with a fumble recovery. But, that was in very limited snaps.

This is another guy who can challenge others on the roster and compete, just like Sean Payton wants.
