Derek Carr reportedly has set a deadline for finding new team

Now a free agent, quarterback Derek Carr has reportedly set a timetable regarding a decision on a new home.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Carr wants to find his next team before the start of free agency on March 15.

"He would like to do something before the start of free agency, so maybe around the time of the combine, we might have an idea of where Derek Carr is going to land," Rapoport said.

While Carr has set a deadline, that doesn't mean he will rush into making a decision. Rapoport noted that nothing is imminent, and it's likely that Carr will soon meet with the Carolina Panthers, another squad in search of an upgrade at QB.

Along with Carr, the Jets will reportedly target Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Recently, the four-time MVP said he'd decide his future following a four-day "darkness retreat." The initial word was that the Packers would like to keep Rodgers around, but the latest report indicates that the team might be ready to move on.

Adding either Carr or Rodgers would be a massive get for the Jets, who were held back by subpar quarterback play in 2022. Former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson struggled mightily in his sophomore season, which led to his benching several times throughout the year. While the Jets might not be willing to give up entirely on Wilson, they're in search of an upgrade at the very least.

Despite getting out to a hot start in 2022, the Jets ended the year on a six-game losing streak, finishing 7-10. However, with talented young players on both ends of the ball, the Jets might be a Carr or Rodgers away from becoming a serious contender in the AFC.
