Derek Carr’s Retirement Leaves Saints at a Crossroads

With Derek Carr officially announcing his retirement, the New Orleans Saints find themselves entering a new era at the quarterback position.

Carr ends his career with over 39,000 passing yards and 217 touchdowns, earning a reputation as one of the league’s most respected teammates.

His departure leaves a significant void in leadership and experience, forcing the franchise to reevaluate its direction moving forward. As the Saints look ahead to the 2025 season, all eyes will be on how the team navigates life after Carr and who will step up to lead the offense.

A Full Rebuild Under Center

With Derek Carr stepping away from the game, the Saints appear poised for a full rebuild under center.

The franchise took its first step toward the future by selecting Louisville QB Tyler Shough in the 2025 NFL Draft. In addition, Spencer Rattler, who started six times last season, remains an intriguing option.

Known for his playmaking ability and competitive fire, Rattler could push for a starting role if he impresses during training camp. Neither player is a surefire franchise quarterback— yet. But in the post-Carr era, the Saints have a chance to evaluate without pressure and see who, if anyone, can take the reins.

If neither seizes the moment, the franchise could be looking toward the 2026 NFL Draft or exploring a trade for a more proven option.

Did the Saints Miss on Shedeur?

Looking back, the Saints may have missed an opportunity by passing on Shedeur Sanders.

Had the front office known that Derek Carr was planning to retire this offseason, Sanders could have been a franchise-altering selection. With NFL-ready poise, elite accuracy, and a proven track record under pressure at Colorado, Sanders would’ve given New Orleans a dynamic and marketable face of the franchise.

Still, his future in the league remains one to watch— and if he shines early in his rookie campaign for the Browns, the Saints could find themselves back in the quarterback market, this time as potential trade suitors. With ample draft capital and a desire to solidify the most important position in football, a blockbuster move for Sanders might not be out of the question down the line.
