Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson issued an apology to the team’s fans following comments he made after Saturday’s preseason game.

Watson said his frustration got the better of him when he suggested that Browns fans were “disrespectful” to him and that their booing is personal and not performance-related.

“I thought I was going to get a little different response. But, my emotions got the best of me,” Watson said. “My comments weren’t intending to go at the fans. I understand the frustration.”

Watson added that he was determined to “take full responsibility of this opportunity.”

Watson had no choice but to address his comments after he was named the team’s Week 1 starter. Fan reaction was overwhelmingly negative to that decision, though that goes far beyond Watson’s remarks.

The Browns do not play at home until Week 3, leading some to wonder if the team is trying to shield Watson from the fan negativity until he gets the chance to win some of them over.
