Designated role could be saving grace for Raiders running back

When the Las Vegas Raiders released their first unofficial depth chart, Zamir White’s placement as the second running back behind Ashton Jeanty came as a surprise.

Despite the fourth-year running back’s down 2024, White has enjoyed a successful training camp so far. It is the type of offseason he needed, as his rookie contract expires after the 2025 season. With head coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly specializing in effective running games, White has an opportunity to prove he deserves a role in an NFL backfield.

From what White has shown so far, Carroll already seems to have an idea of how to deploy the running back.

White’s new specialty could be what seals his roster spot.

From everything coming out of Raiders training camp, White has made a positive impression on Carroll and a new coaching staff.

“He really has sent a message that he’s the hammer,” Carroll said about White. “I love having different styles of running backs. His physicality that we’ve been celebrating with him, and we tell him we like the way he runs. Don’t try to be something that you’re not. Run heavy and run thick and tough like he does. I’m really excited about what he’s done.”

A player widely considered on the fringes of the 53-man roster when training camp started, White has done plenty to earn his keep.

The presence of Jeanty means White is not going to land a featured role anytime soon. However, Carroll and Kelly have both employed diverse backfields throughout their coaching careers. The ‘hammer’ role means White would see regular playing time in short-yardage situations, including near or at the goal line.

With his career trajectory on a roller coaster, Carroll’s comments give White a chance to cement a clear role in the NFL.
