The Detroit Lions reportedly hired another coach for Dan Campbell's staff on Tuesday.
According to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, the Lions are hiring Tyler Roehl as an offensive assistant coach. The 39-year-old spent the 2024 season as Iowa State's offensive coordinator and running backs coach.
A former running back, Roehl scored 34 touchdowns during his final two seasons at North Dakota State before joining the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent. Roehl tore his ACL a little more than a month later and never played an NFL snap.
One year after the injury, Roehl coached running backs at Concordia College before returning to North Dakota State. He started as a graduate assistant in 2011 before returning three years later to coach running backs and tight ends.
In 2019, the Bison promoted Roehl to offensive coordinator. They averaged 37.1 points per game during an undefeated season behind Trey Lance.
North Dakota State won seven FCS national championships during Roehl's tenure. Last season, Iowa State set a program record by winning 11 games, including a Pop-Tarts Bowl victory over Miami.
The Cyclones missed the College Football Playoff after losing the Big 12 Championship Game to Arizona State, but Roehl's offense averaged 416.2 yards and 31.1 points per game. The prior year, they averaged 364.9 yards and 26.2 points when finishing 7-6.
Roehl joins a Lions offense that dominated the NFL in 2024. Detroit went 15-2 after scoring an NFL-leading 33.2 points per game. The former running back can help oversee the prolific backfield tandem of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.
Detroit's coaching staff has undergone considerable change this offseason. The Chicago Bears hired offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as their new head coach, and he brought wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El and assistant quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett with him to Detroit's NFC North rival.
Meanwhile, the Jets named former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn their new head coach. Glenn hired former Detroit passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand as his offensive coordinator.
