The Detroit Lions head coach, Dan Campbell, held a press conference ahead of Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers, but the media had their eyes on a recent podcast appearance from their disgruntled star tight end.

During the conference, the media asked Campbell about tight end Sam LaPorta’s comments about his frustrations with contract talks, and Campbell immediately shot down any behind-the-scenes drama, stating that the team is okay behind the scenes:

“I know what it may appear like. I know Sam. We all know Sam, and honestly, I don’t even think twice about those comments because I know what he’s about. We’re all good here, and we’re not going to let this be a distraction. He’s not; we’re not; we’re all good.”

The press would continue to ask questions, leading to a frustrated Campbell becoming indignant with reporters. While Campbell downplays the significance of LaPorta’s comments, unfortunately, the comments have proven to be a distraction as the team heads into a pivotal showdown with a division rival. LaPorta would also express regret for his comments:

“I think there was maybe a bit of a misconception with … I guess, like, my intentions are, I want to play for this team. I give everything I have. My teammates do as well. They all love me, respect me, and support me, and they want to see me be happy and compensated.”

While his comments are meant to try and keep everything on track, this is a testament to how media work, and something LaPorta should learn. Every comment, especially during contract negotiations, will be run with by the media. Also, on LaPorta’s end, every comment you make will be analyzed. Think before you speak, because anything that can be misunderstood will be.

The Detroit Lions will suit up against the Packers Sunday, October 25 at 4:25 PM. As contract talks drag on, neither coaches or players believe this will be a distraction.
