Detroit Lions front office could get poached by the Miami Dolphins, one guy already considered a local favorite to replace Chris Grier
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

Last week, the Miami Dolphins and general manager Chris Grier mutually agreed to part ways with each other. It seems the Dolphins are about to have a big reshuffling after the 2025 season. They're going to be looking for a new GM, and some in Miami believe that guy currently works for the Detroit Lions.

Lions assistant GM Ray Agnew is considered a local favorite to be the Dolphins' next general manager

Nico is right. It's actually pretty crazy that Agnew is not already a general manager somewhere. This is a guy who has been a big part of building two of the best programs in the league. He was the Rams' director of pro personnel on their ascent to two Super Bowl appearances and one win. Yes, he was in Detroit in 2021 when the Rams got that win, but his fingerprints were all over it. As were Brad Holmes'

In Detroit, he's helped Holmes scout and build the team you see today. The Lions team has gone from one of the worst franchises in the league to perennial Super Bowl contenders. Yes, they're still that, even though this is a sky fall week for Lions fans.

Despite all of that, Agnew has never been interviewed for a GM job by any team, and it makes no sense at all. The only potential excuse is that he's older than most GMs, and when you look at who's been getting hired, it's usually these young hot shots who have been working their way up the ladder. Still, that's pretty ridiculous.

Now, if the Dolphins do decide to hire Agnew after the season, the Lions do get something out of that. They'll get two compensatory third-round picks for the loss of a minority front office member to a general manager position. The Lions would get one in the 2026 NFL Draft and one in the 2027 NFL Draft.

We'll see what happens in a few months, but Agnew deserves to be an NFL GM if he wants to be one, and the Dolphins would be wise to make that happen.
