The Detroit Lions enter Week 3 with a 1-1 record after a dominant win over the Chicago Bears last week. Dan Campbell and company were able to dominate former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson by a final score of 52-21.
Despite the big win, there are some concerns that the Lions are facing. One of those concerns comes on the defensive line.
At the very least, adding more depth to the defensive line would be wise. Last year, Detroit dealt with a lot of injuries on the defensive side of the football. On the line, the Lions currently have Tyleik Williams and DJ Reader as their starters, but the depth behind them is suspect.
With that being said, they have been linked to a potential trade with the Dallas Cowboys that could bring in a great depth piece who could actually end up being a starter.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report has suggested Detroit as a potential trade destination for defensive tackle Mazi Smith.
“Smith was viewed as a raw prospect coming out of college and was always expected to need time to develop. He’s still a 6’3″, 337-pound former first-round pick with a tremendous amount of untapped potential. A change of scenery might be required for him to reach it,” Knox wrote.
Smith, who stands in at 6-foot-3 and 337 pounds, has the talent to become a special defensive tackle. He just hasn’t been able to live up to the hype with the Cowboys.
Throughout the 34 games he has played over the last two years, Smith has racked up 54 total tackles to go along with two sacks. He’s more than capable of helping against the run, but he can also get after the quarterback.
Perhaps joining a team led by Campbell would help Smith unlock his full potential. Assuming the price is right, the Lions should certainly look into the idea.
While it’s just an idea at this point in time, Smith would be a very interesting trade target for Detroit. It’s something worth keeping an eye on as the trade deadline draws closer.
