Detroit Lions Make Unexpected Quarterback Move Ahead of NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions are coming off one of the best seasons in franchise history, which ended in a shocking divisional-round loss to the Washington Commanders, despite entering the NFC postseason as the No. 1 seed.

Now, the focus has shifted to the offseason. With free agency in the rearview, the next major step is the NFL draft, set to take place from Thursday through Saturday. The Lions hold the No. 28 overall pick for their first selection.

However, just days before the draft, the Lions made a somewhat unexpected move at quarterback. On Wednesday, they released former Georgia Bulldogs standout Jake Fromm, who had signed with the team in 2024.

Fromm has never had much of an opportunity in the NFL. After a stellar collegiate career at Georgia—where he spent three seasons from 2017 to 2019—he landed with the New York Giants. He made just two starts during the 2021 season, completing 27 of 60 passes for 210 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.

He has also spent time with the Washington Commanders and Buffalo Bills before joining the Lions' practice squad last summer.

Now, Fromm finds himself as the odd man out in Detroit’s quarterback room, with the team currently carrying Jared Goff, Hendon Hooker, and Kyle Allen on the roster.
