Detroit Lions Predicted to Make Unprecedented Aidan Hutchinson Decision

Aidan Hutchinson has been solid for the Detroit Lions to start the 2025 season. In 5 games, he's racked up 12 tackles, five tackles for loss, five sacks, one hurry and 14 pressures. He's been a big contributor to the Lions' 4-1 record.

After being selected with the No. 2 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Hutchinson has been as good as advertised for Detroit. Since being drafted, the Lions have yet to record a losing record and have made two playoff appearances.

With Hutchinson, who just turned 25 years old, establishing himself as one of the NFL's prominent pass rushers, there have been questions about securing a long-term deal to remain in Detroit.

ESPN recently posted an article with several analysts discussing which players are most likely to receive extensions in the near future.

Jeremy Fowler predicted that the Lions could decide on a Hutchinson extension very soon, saying, "Both sides have had exploratory discussions." The pass rusher is in the fourth year of his rookie contract.

“Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson looks destined for a new deal,” Fowler wrote. “Both sides have had exploratory discussions about an extension, for which Hutchinson is eligible as a fourth-year pro.”

Green Bay Packers’  Micah Parsons ($186 million), San Francisco 49ers’ Nick Bosa ($170 million) and Cleveland Browns' Myles Garrett ($160 million) have the three largest pass rusher contracts.

In 67 games, Parsons has racked up 264 tackles, 55 sacks, 64 tackles for loss and 188 pressures. Hutchinson, in 44 games, has 134 tackles, 33.5 sacks, 35 tackles for loss and 133 pressures.

Parsons, who was selected with the No. 12 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has considerably higher numbers than Hutchinson. That suggests Hutchinson may not be getting the same level of pay as Parsons.

"Top pass rushers now make quarterback money, punctuated by Micah Parsons' four-year, $186 million deal with Green Bay,” Fowler added. “While I'm not sure Hutchinson tops that number, he'll be among the highest paid at his position whenever this deal gets done.”

However, Fowler's claim would still have Hutchinson in line to easily earn the largest contract for a defender in Lions history. That's currently held by defensive lineman Alim McNeill on a four-year, $97 million deal.

It also allows fifth-year general manager Brad Holmes to once again extend a young star early. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown signed a four-year, $120 million deal at 24 years old, while Penei Sewell was 23 years old when signing his four-year, $112 million deal.

While an extension is intriguing, up next on the agenda for the Lions and Hutchinson is a Week 6 "Sunday Night Football" matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
