Detroit Lions Strongly Considering Shocking Roster Decision

Devin White’s journey with the Detroit Lions has taken an unexpected turn this training camp. Signed as a veteran depth option amid a thin linebacker group caused by injuries, the former top-five draft pick now finds himself in a genuine battle for a starting role as the team prepares for the 2026 season.

Lions executive Rick Spielman confirmed as much during the broadcast of the team’s preseason game against the Washington Commanders on Saturday.

Spielman highlighted White’s ability to make plays and described an active competition between the newcomer and Malcolm Rodriguez for a starting linebacker spot.

Rodriguez, the presumed favorite after starting the second preseason game, is working his way back from a 2024 ACL tear. While he finished the 2025 season, observers noted he had not fully regained his prior form.

The two competed against each other in that second preseason contest, with Rodriguez posting two tackles on 19 snaps.

White arrived in Detroit with a lengthy résumé but a recent history of inconsistency. Selected high by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he started 75 games over five seasons, earned two Pro Bowl nods and one All-Pro selection, and contributed to a Super Bowl championship.

After that peak, his career path grew rockier. A free-agent stint with the Philadelphia Eagles ended in a training-camp release, followed by limited action with the Houston Texans and a full season of starts with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025. Many viewed him as a player who had lost a step.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell has seen something different this summer. He has publicly noted that White is moving with the same quickness and physicality that made him a headache for offenses during his Tampa years, when Campbell was still with the New Orleans Saints.

White has logged 45 preseason snaps so far, recording six tackles and one pressure, numbers that have only reinforced the coaching staff’s growing confidence.

The Lions’ linebacker structure leaves little ambiguity about the open job. Jack Campbell is locked in as the middle linebacker and defensive signal-caller, while Derrick Barnes handles the SAM role that often involves edge responsibilities.

That leaves the WILL position next to Campbell as the primary prize for White and Rodriguez. With roster cutdowns approaching in roughly a week, the competition carries real stakes.

What began as a low-risk addition to address depth has evolved into a meaningful evaluation. Whether White’s resurgence stems from renewed health, better scheme fit, or simply a player finding motivation in a fresh opportunity, the Lions appear willing to explore it fully.

For a former high draft pick seeking to reestablish himself, the path from roster bubble to potential starter is already proving more promising than many expected when he first put on the Honolulu blue.
